CPP Demands Navy Deployment and Power Cuts as Accra Floods Spiral into Crisis

The Convention People's Party (CPP) has called on the government to deploy Ghana Navy speedboats and water rescue units to help evacuate residents trapped by severe flooding across Accra, following heavy rainfall on Monday, 29th June 2026. The party described the disaster as entirely avoidable, pointing to years of unchecked encroachment on waterways and the reckless dumping of refuse into drainage systems.

In a statement issued by National Communications Director Osei Kofi Acquah, the CPP said the flooding had caused loss of lives and significant property damage, with conditions threatening to deteriorate further as more rainfall is forecast. "This disaster is SELF-INFLICTED since it was avoidable and preventable," the statement read, laying blame squarely on the long-standing failure of authorities to enforce environmental regulations.

The party also urged the Ministry of Energy to order the immediate shutdown of electricity supplies in flood-affected areas where rising water levels have reached power installations, warning that residents face serious electrocution risks if swift action is not taken.

All Hands on Deck

The CPP stressed that security agencies, emergency responders and technical experts must coordinate without delay. It appealed to residents to stay away from flood-prone zones and remain calm as relief operations continue. The party also reminded the public of key emergency contact numbers:

  • 191 – Ghana Police Service
  • 192 – Ghana National Fire Service
  • 193 – Ambulance Service
  • NADMO hotlines for disaster-related assistance

Transport, commerce and public services across the capital have been badly disrupted by the flooding, with emergency agencies still conducting rescue and relief operations in the worst-hit communities. The CPP said it stands in full solidarity with affected families and will continue to follow developments as the country manages the ongoing crisis.
