Ghana's businesses face extended closures as flood recovery stretches into weeks
Businesses struggle to restart operations after severe flooding
Ghana's business sector faces prolonged disruptions as companies devastated by recent floods work to restore operations. Mark Badu Aboagye, Chief Executive of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), has indicated that affected businesses will need to temporarily send workers home whilst they rebuild damaged facilities and inventory.
"We are not sacking them, but rather they have to stay home as long as we have not been able to put our offices back in shape," Aboagye explained. Manufacturing firms have been hit particularly hard, with raw materials destroyed and stock damaged. Even insured businesses face additional delays as they navigate the claims process to restore lost inventory and equipment.
Insurance and banking sectors mobilise support
Insurance companies are moving to accelerate payouts. Ernest Frimpong, Managing Director of Bedrock Insurance, said firms are targeting five-day turnarounds for claim settlements, though he acknowledged delays stem partly from incomplete documentation submitted by affected businesses.
Ghana's banking sector has also pledged assistance. John Awuah, Chief Executive of the Ghana Bankers Association, confirmed that commercial banks will renegotiate credit facilities for affected businesses, mirroring support offered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Banks themselves expect performance impacts that will be reflected in loan portfolios.
Industry leaders expressed frustration that the flooding appears largely preventable, calling for decisive action to prevent future disasters of similar scale.
