Ghana Card replacements now easier: NIA launches 24/7 centres and overseas online service

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has significantly streamlined access to Ghana Card replacements, rolling out services across multiple locations and introducing a dedicated online application system for Ghanaians abroad. The move aims to reduce travel burdens and processing delays for citizens seeking to renew their national identification documents.

Executive Secretary Wisdom Koku Deku announced the expansion on Monday, October 19, 2026, confirming that replacement services are now available through the NIA's online portal at register.nia.gov.gh and at four operational Prestige 24/7 Centres located in Labone, Sakumono, Bantama and Suame. An additional centre in Amakom will soon join the network, bringing even greater convenience to applicants across Accra and regional hubs.

24/7 access for local applicants

The Prestige 24/7 Centres represent a significant upgrade to the NIA's service delivery model. Operating around the clock, these facilities allow Ghanaians to apply for card replacements at times that suit their schedules, addressing complaints about limited operating hours at traditional centres. Applicants can visit any of the four centres currently operational, with the Amakom site expected to commence services in the coming weeks.

For those who prefer to apply online rather than visit a physical centre, the digital portal offers a convenient alternative. This hybrid approach caters to different preferences and accessibility needs across the country's urban centres.

Game-changer for diaspora Ghanaians

Perhaps the most significant development is the online replacement service now available to Ghanaians living abroad. Citizens residing in eleven countries—the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, United Arab Emirates, France, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Denmark—can now apply for replacement Ghana Cards without making costly trips home.

This expansion eliminates a longstanding pain point for diaspora communities who previously had no option but to apply in person at NIA offices within Ghana or navigate limited consular services. The online platform addresses the practical reality that millions of Ghanaians abroad require valid Ghana Cards for banking, heritage confirmation, business dealings and periodic visa renewals.

Why it matters for Ghana

The Ghana Card has become essential infrastructure for financial inclusion and formal participation in Ghana's digital economy. Banks, mobile money operators and government agencies increasingly require it for account opening and transaction verification. By making replacements more accessible domestically and internationally, the NIA is removing barriers that previously left thousands unable to maintain current documentation.

For the diaspora specifically, this reform signals recognition of Ghanaians abroad as stakeholders in the national identification system. The initiative also reflects broader efforts to digitise government services and reduce bureaucratic friction—themes central to Ghana's digital transformation agenda.

Deku indicated that an update service will be added to the portal soon, suggesting the NIA plans to expand digital offerings beyond replacements. This roadmap hints at potential future features such as address changes, name corrections and other routine updates previously requiring in-person visits.

The Authority's slogan, "Providing Future Solutions Now," frames these changes within a modernisation narrative. Whether the infrastructure and processing capacity can meet anticipated demand remains to be seen, particularly if uptake among diaspora communities proves high. Nonetheless, the expansion represents meaningful progress in making Ghana's national identification system more responsive to citizen needs.
