Amasaman Obeyeyie residents demand road repairs as infrastructure crisis deepens
Road crisis sparks mass protest in Ga West
Residents of Amasaman Obeyeyie in Ga West Municipality have taken to the streets in frustration over the deteriorating condition of their road network. The protest, which drew traders, drivers, students and youth groups, saw demonstrators blockading key sections of the main road whilst carrying placards and chanting slogans to demand urgent government action.
According to residents, the road has become nearly impassable, particularly during rainy seasons, triggering frequent accidents, vehicle damage and transport delays. The poor infrastructure has also driven up living costs and disrupted economic activity in the area. One resident described the situation as critical: "We have suffered for years. Ambulances struggle to pass here, taxis refuse to come here, and during rainfall the road becomes a death trap. We are tired of promises."
The impact extends beyond commerce. Schoolchildren face daily challenges reaching classes during heavy rains due to flooding and muddy conditions, whilst residents say repeated appeals to local authorities and political leaders have yielded no results.
The community is calling on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ga West Municipal Assembly to prioritise construction and rehabilitation of the Obeyeyie–Amasaman stretch, which connects several surrounding communities and serves as a key economic route.
Police maintained order throughout the peaceful demonstration, with no violence or arrests reported. Local authorities have not yet responded officially, but residents expect urgent engagement and a concrete timeline for rehabilitation work.
