Mahama Tells Big Push Contractors: Complete Your Roads Well and Payment Comes Within Two Weeks
President John Dramani Mahama has given a firm assurance to contractors engaged under the government's Big Push infrastructure programme that payment will follow swiftly once their projects are completed and certified — with a turnaround of roughly two weeks or less.
Speaking during his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Central Region on Saturday, 27th June 2026, the President said Finance Minister Ato Forson has already made funds available specifically to honour contractor obligations, dismissing any suggestion that government would be scrambling to find money after certification.
"Mind you, we have the funds available. It is not the case that we are now looking for the money to pay those who are done. Ato Forson has ensured that finances are made available so any contractor who is able to produce the completion certificate, in about two weeks or less, you will receive your money," President Mahama said.
The President also used the occasion to raise the stakes for contractors, revealing that a second phase of the Big Push Programme is already in the pipeline. He warned that only those who deliver quality work on schedule would be considered for the next phase, directly linking current performance to future government contracts.
"I have told the contractors under the Big Push Programme that we have a second phase of that programme, and so whoever is able to complete his road well and on time will be considered for the second phase," he said, after personally inspecting several road projects in the region and expressing satisfaction with progress on the ground.
The Big Push initiative is central to the Mahama administration's broader infrastructure agenda, targeting road networks and development corridors across the country. The latest assurances are expected to energise contractors and reduce hesitancy stemming from Ghana's long-standing history of government payment delays on public works.
