African Union demands regional unity against Sahel terrorism after Mali attacks
AU condemns Mali violence, urges Sahel nations to unite
The African Union has issued a strong condemnation of coordinated terrorist attacks that struck multiple locations across Mali on July 4, 2026, calling on regional governments and continental institutions to strengthen their response to the escalating security crisis in the Sahel.
In a statement released on July 5, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed deep sympathy with victims' families and reaffirmed the AU's solidarity with Mali during the crisis. He warned that the attacks demonstrate the persistent and widening threat posed by militant groups across the Sahel, emphasising the need for governments and regional bodies to enhance cooperation whilst upholding international humanitarian law and protecting civilians.
The assaults targeted military installations across a broad geographic range, striking locations in northern Mali including Anefis, Aguelhoc and Gao, central areas around Sevare, and the southern town of Kenioroba—illustrating the extensive operational reach of the insurgent groups involved. One of the attacked areas was a town in the north where Malian forces and Russian fighters are stationed.
The African Union pledged its commitment to working alongside Malian authorities and partner nations to achieve lasting peace and security across Mali and the wider Sahel region, signalling continental support for addressing the deepening crisis.
