Burkina Faso cuts ties with France as West Africa tensions escalate

Burkina Faso has officially broken off diplomatic relations with France, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the West African nation and its former colonial ruler. The Communications Minister, Gilbert Ouedraogo, announced the decision on Friday, accusing France of supporting "subversive networks" and harbouring "terrorists" — allegations Paris has consistently denied.

France responded swiftly, expressing regret at what it called a "hostile and unfounded decision" that reflects a "worrying drift" by Burkinabe authorities. The French foreign ministry has advised its nationals in Burkina Faso to exercise heightened vigilance amid the diplomatic fallout, whilst considering reciprocal measures in response.

The breakdown follows years of deteriorating relations centred on security, sovereignty and claims of foreign interference. Burkina Faso, like much of the Sahel region, has been fighting a brutal Islamist insurgency that has spilled over from Mali, claiming thousands of lives and displacing millions since the early 2010s.

The rupture reflects broader regional frustration with Western military and political involvement in the Sahel. Several West African nations have recently moved closer to Russia and away from traditional French influence, citing dissatisfaction with the effectiveness of French counter-terrorism operations.
