Accra becomes global hub for reparatory justice dialogue as 80+ nations converge
Historic gathering convenes under President Mahama's leadership
Accra has emerged as the focal point for international diplomatic efforts on reparatory justice, with representatives from more than 80 countries arriving in Ghana for the Next Steps Conference. The gathering brings together an array of high-level delegates, including Presidents from Senegal, Namibia, Liberia, and São Tomé and Príncipe, along with the Prime Minister of Barbados, the Vice Prime Minister of Equatorial Guinea, and the Speaker of the Algerian Parliament.
President John Dramani Mahama has convened the conference, signalling Ghana's commitment to driving global dialogue on historical justice and redress. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the broad participation across African, Caribbean, and international delegations.
Building on landmark UN resolution
The conference follows three months after the adoption of UN Resolution A/RES/80/250, a pivotal decision that formally declared the transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity. This recognition has reshaped international discourse and placed reparations at the centre of global conversations.
Officials expect the Accra summit to consolidate international commitments, establish concrete multilateral pathways, and translate reparatory justice from policy principles into actionable global frameworks that nations can implement.
