Accra Flooding: Health Officers Issue Critical Food Safety Warning to Residents

Following the recent flooding that devastated parts of Accra, Public Health Technical Officers have issued an urgent appeal to residents to maintain rigorous food safety standards to prevent disease outbreaks.

The Association of Public Health Technical Officers expressed deep condolences to families who lost loved ones in the floods and extended sympathy to survivors who suffered extensive property damage. Alongside these sentiments, officials stressed the critical need for heightened vigilance regarding food handling and consumption in flood-affected areas.

Floodwaters often carry contaminated materials and pathogens that can compromise food supplies and water sources. Residents have been advised to:

• Discard any food items that came into contact with floodwater
• Boil drinking water before consumption
• Practise thorough hand hygiene before preparing meals
• Store food in secure, elevated locations away from moisture

The health officers warned that improper food handling in the aftermath of floods significantly increases the risk of waterborne illnesses and foodborne infections. Communities in affected zones are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of illness to local health authorities immediately.
