NHIA Chief's Three-Point Reform Plan Targets Illegal Charges and Public Trust
NHIA Launches Fresh Reform Drive
The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana's National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has unveiled a three-pillar reform initiative aimed at overhauling the struggling healthcare insurance system. The strategy focuses on internal controls, staff wellbeing, and restoring public confidence in the institution.
According to the CEO, a key priority involves stamping out illegal charges that have long frustrated Ghanaian healthcare users. The move comes amid widespread complaints that patients face hidden fees despite holding valid NHIA cards, undermining trust in the universal health coverage scheme.
The reform blueprint also emphasises strengthening transparency and accountability across all NHIA operations. Officials say improved internal governance structures and better staff welfare conditions will help reduce corruption and ensure funds are properly managed.
The three pillars—enhanced internal controls with improved employee support; rebuilding public confidence; and eliminating unlawful fees alongside transparency measures—represent the authority's commitment to stabilising Ghana's healthcare insurance sector ahead of crucial policy reviews.
