Ghana Needs United Front Against Drug Abuse, Says Chief of Staff
Government Pledges Intensified Drug Fight
Ghana's Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has urged sustained national unity and coordinated action in combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking as the country marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on 6 June. Speaking at the commemoration held under the theme "The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses", Mr Debrah emphasised that the fight requires stakeholders from government, security services, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, and young people to work collectively.
Mr Debrah stressed that drug abuse is not merely a security matter but a pressing public health, social, and development challenge that undermines families, communities, and the potential of young people. On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, he reaffirmed the government's commitment to intensifying efforts against illicit drug trafficking whilst expanding access to treatment, recovery, and reintegration services for individuals affected by addiction.
Prevention Through Opportunity and Hope
The Chief of Staff highlighted that prevention is rooted in opportunity, purpose, and hope. He stressed the administration's focus on empowering youth through education, skills development, and job creation, noting that such initiatives are essential to protecting young people from drug abuse.
Mr Debrah called on all stakeholders to remain vigilant and exercise shared responsibility in building a safer, healthier, and more resilient Ghana. He urged young people to safeguard their future, describing it as invaluable, and expressed optimism that a united national front would achieve lasting progress in the fight against drugs.
