Abanga Fuseini takes NPP youth leadership as party gears up for 2028 election push
Abanga Fuseini Yakubu has been elected National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), securing 1,550 votes in a competitive six-candidate race at the party's National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi on Saturday, 3 October 2026. The election marks a significant transition in the NPP's youth leadership structure as the party positions itself for the crucial 2028 general election.
The contest saw Abanga defeat five other candidates: Alfred Kumi Ababio, Vera Oye Bram-Larbi, Michael Osei Boateng, Clement Opoku Gyamfi and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah. The Electoral Commission oversaw the voting process, which was conducted across 31 centres at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, drawing participation from over 7,000 delegates representing the party across Ghana.
Youth mobilisation strategy for 2028
Abanga's election victory reflects his campaign platform centred on energising the NPP's youth base during a critical period for the party. His campaign emphasised youth engagement and grassroots mobilisation, with a specific target of securing four million youth votes for the NPP's flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 general election. This ambitious goal underscores the party's recognition that youth voter turnout and enthusiasm will be pivotal in determining electoral performance.
As the new National Youth Organiser, Abanga assumes responsibility for coordinating and mobilising young party members and supporters across all 16 regions of the country. He succeeds Salam Mustapha in the role and will work alongside the newly elected national executives to strengthen the party's youth wing infrastructure ahead of the 2028 campaign season.
What this means for Ghana's 2028 election cycle
The election of Abanga and eight other national executives represents the NPP's attempt to refresh its leadership and prepare for a competitive electoral environment. The 2028 general election will be particularly significant as it determines whether the NPP can extend its governance beyond the current administration or whether the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will return to power.
Youth mobilisation has become increasingly important in Ghanaian politics, with younger voters demonstrating greater engagement in recent election cycles. The focus on recruiting four million young voters suggests the NPP recognises both the size and the strategic importance of the youth demographic. Ghana's population skews young, with citizens under 35 comprising a substantial proportion of the eligible electorate.
Abanga's role will involve practical work—organising rallies, coordinating campaign activities, building party structures at constituency and regional levels, and ensuring consistent messaging to young voters. His success in this position could significantly influence how effectively the NPP reaches and persuades younger Ghanaians during the 2028 campaign.
The Kumasi conference also saw elections for nine national executive positions across the party, with voting organised at multiple centres to ensure fair representation and broad participation from the party's delegate base. This comprehensive leadership renewal signals the NPP's confidence in moving forward with fresh energy into its next phase of party development.
