Telecel Ghana taps Black Sherif for year-long Project X push to boost digital payments
Telecel Ghana has launched Project X, an ambitious year-long marketing initiative partnering with music sensation Black Sherif to deepen consumer engagement with its Telecel Cash mobile money platform and drive adoption among younger demographics across the country.
The campaign represents a strategic move by the telecommunications company to leverage celebrity influence and social media reach in promoting its digital payment ecosystem at a time when mobile money adoption continues to shape Ghana's fintech landscape.
How the partnership works
According to Telecel Ghana Chief Executive Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, the initiative combines the brand's bold identity with Black Sherif's considerable social media following and cultural relevance among Ghana's youth. The artiste will deliver monthly surprises and promotional content across his platforms, keeping audiences engaged throughout the campaign period.
Black Sherif will distribute exclusive promotional codes via TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram that unlock free Telecel Cash transactions, gifts, tokens, and other rewards for participating consumers. The strategy capitalises on the musician's substantial following on these platforms, where his content reaches millions of young Ghanaians regularly.
"Over the next year, almost every month, there will be surprises, and he will bear the surprises on behalf of Telecel Cash. So anytime he goes live, people need to listen to him, because you don't know what surprise he has," Ing. Obo-Nai explained at the launch.
Security messaging at campaign core
Beyond engagement, the campaign emphasises Telecel Cash security—a critical concern for many Ghanaians evaluating mobile money platforms. Telecel has positioned the partnership as an opportunity to reassure customers about the safety of storing funds on its wallet, provided users maintain confidentiality of passwords and passcodes.
Ing. Obo-Nai stressed that security protection formed a central pillar of the messaging, aiming to convert hesitant consumers into active Telecel Cash users by demonstrating robust safeguards.
Why it matters for Ghana
Project X reflects broader trends in Ghana's digital financial services sector, where mobile money platforms compete intensely for market share and user engagement. With over 70% of Ghana's population lacking formal banking access, mobile wallets like Telecel Cash serve crucial roles in financial inclusion.
Celebrity partnerships have proven effective in Ghana's consumer market, particularly in reaching youth demographics who drive digital adoption. By embedding transactional incentives within entertainment content, Telecel positions Telecel Cash not merely as a financial tool but as an integrated part of young Ghanaians' digital lifestyles.
The campaign also signals confidence in Ghana's mobile money market maturity, where consumers increasingly expect value-added services beyond basic transfers. For Telecel Play users and existing Telecel subscribers, Project X creates additional reasons to maintain engagement with the broader Telecel ecosystem.
As mobile money penetration deepens across Ghana—particularly in urban and peri-urban areas—initiatives like Project X demonstrate how telecommunications companies are adapting marketing strategies to sustain growth in an increasingly competitive digital payments environment.
