Black Sherif Joins Telecel's Project X: What TGMA Artiste of the Year Partnership Means for Digital Money in Ghana
Telecel Ghana has announced a major partnership with award-winning musician Black Sherif, positioning the TGMA Artiste of the Year as the face of Project X, an ambitious initiative designed to drive digital financial adoption among Ghanaian consumers. The partnership, unveiled at Kempinski Gold Coast City Hotel, aims to merge entertainment value with financial technology, offering Telecel customers exclusive rewards and experiences tied to the musician's online engagements.
Under the scheme, Telecel customers who engage with Black Sherif content online will receive unique "BlackoCodes"—digital reward vouchers that unlock exclusive discounts, free transactions, and access to special experiences through the Telecel Play App. The initiative represents a strategic shift by the telecommunications giant to position mobile money not merely as a transaction tool, but as an entertainment-linked lifestyle service.
How Project X Works
The mechanics are straightforward: customers must activate their Telecel Cash mobile money wallets and download the Telecel Play App. When Black Sherif releases content or engages fans online, accompanying BlackoCodes will be distributed. Customers who secure these codes gain access to rewards ranging from transaction fee waivers to exclusive merchandise and experiences.
Ing Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, framed the partnership as a convergence of two narratives. "Black Sherif is more than an award-winning artiste. He represents inspiration and the belief that no dream is too big," she stated at the launch. The company views the musician's authentic journey and resonance with younger Ghanaians as essential to legitimising digital financial services among a demographic often sceptical of traditional banking.
Aneth Muga, Director of Consumer Business at Telecel, emphasised that Project X reflects evolving customer expectations. "Our customers expect more than products; they expect experiences that are simple, secure and exciting," she explained, signalling that financial services companies increasingly compete on user experience rather than functionality alone.
Why It Matters for Ghana
This partnership highlights a broader trend in Ghana's fintech ecosystem: the convergence of entertainment, celebrity endorsement, and financial inclusion. With mobile money adoption still unevenly distributed across Ghana—particularly in rural areas and among younger populations—telecommunications companies are leveraging cultural icons to normalise digital transactions.
Black Sherif's involvement is strategically significant. His meteoric rise from Tema to international recognition, coupled with his authentic street narrative, resonates deeply with Gen Z and millennial Ghanaians—the very demographics Telecel aims to convert into active digital money users. Unlike traditional celebrity endorsements, Project X embeds the musician into the customer experience itself, creating touchpoints that extend beyond advertising.
The launch attracted high-profile attendance, including the Deputy Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Transformation and representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Arts, underscoring government recognition of fintech's role in economic development. The event signals that digital financial inclusion is no longer a niche corporate goal but a priority aligned with national digital transformation agendas.
For Telecel, the initiative addresses a critical challenge: user retention and app engagement. Mobile money adoption in Ghana has plateaued as competition intensifies from MTN Mobile Money, Vodafone Cash, and emerging digital banks. By tying rewards to celebrity content and cultural moments, Telecel seeks to differentiate its offering and increase daily active users on the Telecel Play App.
Black Sherif's statement that the partnership is "about creating opportunities and delivering real value to customers" frames the collaboration as mutually beneficial—the musician gains brand association with a major corporate entity, whilst Telecel gains cultural credibility and fan engagement across social platforms where Black Sherif's audience congregates.
