From Cement Shop to Cash Prize: How Telecel M'ahitti is Rewarding Ghanaians Across All 16 Regions

Telecel Ghana's M'ahitti promotional campaign is delivering life-changing windfalls to ordinary Ghanaians, with participants from remote business hubs to bustling city markets discovering unexpected financial boosts. The four-month initiative, which launched earlier this year and is now in its third week, represents one of the largest consumer reward schemes the country's telecom sector has witnessed, offering more than GH¢5.1 million in total prizes.

Kennedy Boakye, a 46-year-old cement merchant in Nkoranza, Bono East Region, exemplifies the campaign's reach. After a decade of loyal Telecel use, Kennedy initially dismissed the call announcing his GH¢20,000 weekly prize as a scam—a scepticism his wife ultimately helped him overcome. His story mirrors that of Abdul-Jalil Dokurugu, a 24-year-old market trader in Tamale who almost deleted the winning notification, only convinced after a Telecel representative explained his fortune in Dagbani, his native language. Both winners have committed their prizes to business expansion and family welfare.

Prize Structure and Participation Mechanics

The M'ahitti Promo operates on an expansive tiered system: 12,000 customers win GH¢100 daily, 48 customers secure GH¢20,000 weekly, and three grand prize recipients claim GH¢1 million monthly. As of late August, the campaign had already crowned 17 weekly winners and distributed GH¢100 to 2,842 daily winners across Ghana's 16 regions.

Entry is entirely free and accessible through multiple channels: dialling *500#, texting WIN to 500, or activating the promotion via the Telecel Play App. Every airtime recharge, bundle purchase, or Telecel Cash deposit of GH¢10 or more generates entry points, with additional bonus entries awarded to customers using the Telecel Play App and Telecel Cash services. This multi-channel approach has enabled participation from small business operators in rural centres to urban professionals.

Why It Matters for Ghana

The M'ahitti Promo reflects broader trends in Ghana's digital economy and financial inclusion. By integrating rewards into existing mobile services—airtime, data bundles, and mobile money—Telecel has created an incentive structure that encourages deeper engagement with both voice and digital financial services. For participants like Jalil, who plans to reinvest his winnings into family enterprise, the campaign functions as informal venture capital, potentially stimulating micro-business growth across rural and semi-urban economies.

The campaign's nationwide scope also demonstrates the telecom operator's commitment to serving all 16 regions equitably. Winners have emerged from Kumasi, Sowutuom, Sefwi Anwhiaso, Obuasi, Koforidua, Teshie-Nungua and Sunyani, ensuring that benefits flow beyond major urban centres. For smaller towns and villages, such windfalls represent meaningful capital injections into household economies.

Notably, the scheme operates under supervision from the National Lottery Authority–Caritas, providing regulatory oversight and legitimacy. Telecel has also issued explicit warnings against scammers impersonating the promotion, advising customers that genuine winners will never be asked to pay fees, surrender their Telecel Cash PIN, or make payments to claim prizes—guidance especially important given initial winner scepticism.

As the campaign enters its later phases, the opportunity remains open for millions of Ghanaian Telecel customers to participate in daily, weekly and monthly draws across all regions.
