OmniBSIC Bank's 11th Health Walk Draws Hundreds to Accra Wellness Event
OmniBSIC Bank has reinforced its commitment to community wellness by hosting the 11th edition of its Health Walk, an annual event that has evolved from a simple staff initiative into a major fixture on Accra's social calendar. The event, held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, drew hundreds of participants including bank staff, customers, corporate partners and members of the public for a 12-kilometre walk followed by recreational activities and business engagement opportunities.
The scale and scope of the Health Walk demonstrates how Ghanaian financial institutions are expanding their role beyond traditional banking services to create meaningful community experiences. What began as a response to workplace wellness concerns has transformed into a multi-purpose platform combining health promotion, family bonding and enterprise visibility.
A Growing Community Fixture
According to Akyaa Afreh Arhin Addo-Kufuor, Chairperson of the Health Walk Committee, the event's success lies in consistent improvement and strategic planning. "This has now become part of Accra's calendar. People look forward to it and come when we call them," she explained, noting that maintaining such an initiative requires ongoing commitment to quality and engagement.
The 11th edition featured a refined one-way route extending across 12 kilometres, with organisers strategically varying routes across different years to reach different communities throughout Accra. Post-walk activities included branded pavilions, interactive booths, games, live entertainment and an expanded vendor fair showcasing products from established and emerging sectors.
Corporate participation reflected the event's commercial dimension, with partners including Sunu Assurance, Blue Skies, Star Assurance, X Mineral Water, Kasapreko Company Limited and Papaye Fast Foods. Notably, emerging sector businesses also participated, including electric vehicle company EV Afriq, which used the platform to educate participants about electric mobility and cost advantages compared with conventional vehicles.
Why It Matters for Ghana
The Health Walk illustrates an important trend in Ghana's financial services sector: banks leveraging their reach and resources to address public health concerns while building brand loyalty and community presence. As sedentary lifestyles and related health challenges remain concerns for many Ghanaians, corporate-sponsored wellness initiatives provide accessible opportunities for physical activity and family engagement.
The event also demonstrates how Ghanaian businesses are using community platforms to introduce new products and technologies. The presence of electric vehicle companies at the fair, for instance, reflects growing interest in sustainable transport solutions in Ghana's urban centres. Such platforms allow companies to gauge market interest and educate consumers about emerging products in a relaxed, community setting.
Additionally, the Health Walk serves as a model for how Ghanaian banks can differentiate themselves in a competitive market. Justin Carl Arhin, Head of Corporate Communications at OmniBSIC Bank, noted that the event reflects the bank's commitment to experiences beyond conventional banking: "Our tagline is 'Not Just Another Bank', and that means every experience we create must reflect our commitment to doing things differently."
Family Time and Vendor Engagement
Participants valued the event as much for its social benefits as its health aspects. Florence Amihere, an OmniBSIC Bank customer, described the Health Walk as a highlight for her family: "It has become something we genuinely look forward to as a family. The children and adults all have something to enjoy, and it is nice to be able to spend a morning together while doing something healthy."
The vendor fair component proved particularly popular, offering families the opportunity to explore and purchase products whilst engaging in wellness activities. This combination of health, recreation and shopping creates what participants described as a "one-stop experience" that extends the value of a morning walk.
OmniBSIC Bank plans to build on this momentum in future editions by broadening exhibitor participation, strengthening networking opportunities and introducing additional activities. As Accra continues to grow and residents seek ways to balance health, family time and commerce, events like the Health Walk address multiple community needs simultaneously.
