Morocco's 34-Match Unbeaten Run Makes Them World Cup Dark Horses

Morocco has emerged as a genuine World Cup contender after defeating Canada 3-0 in the round of 16, extending their unbeaten run across all competitions to 34 matches. The north African side delivered a dominant performance in Houston despite registering just five shots on goal – the fewest ever recorded by a winning team in a World Cup knockout match.

The Atlas Lions have now won four World Cup knockout matches, equalling the combined total of all other African nations. Morocco's defensive resilience proved decisive, with goalkeeper Bono making crucial saves from Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi early on. Once they settled into the game, Morocco took firm control, with captain Achraf Hakimi – widely regarded as one of the world's best right backs – orchestrating play on both flanks, whilst creative midfielder Brahim Diaz provided two assists to extend his African record to four World Cup assists.

Manager Mohamed Ouahbi emphasised his team's mental fortitude after the match: "What matters is when we are not at our best, we have to be resilient. We have to remember who we are playing for and what we are playing for." Morocco have now progressed through five matches as they did in Qatar 2022, when they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.

Morocco's squad features several players developed in European leagues, creating a competitive edge and belief that has become a blueprint for other African nations. However, questions remain over whether they have truly been tested at their peak, having drawn with Brazil, won narrowly against Netherlands, and faced relatively modest opposition otherwise. A potential quarter-final clash with France would represent their sternest examination yet in this tournament.

With one more victory, Morocco will officially match their 2022 World Cup achievement. Manager Ouahbi reflected on the team's evolution: "It's not a surprise, we are no longer a surprise as of today. When people talk about Morocco they talk about a real contender, a major footballing nation."
