Cape Verde's World Cup Dream Continues: Island Nation Stuns Saudi Arabia to Face Argentina
Historic Achievement for Island Nation
Cape Verde have written one of football's greatest underdog stories by holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw, confirming their passage to the World Cup knockout stages. The Blue Sharks' progression from Group H marks an extraordinary achievement for the small island nation, who will now face reigning champions Argentina in Miami on 3 July.
The result capped a remarkable group campaign for Cape Verde. They earned an impressive draw against European champions Spain in their opening match, followed by a 2-2 stalemate with Uruguay. With Spain's victory over Uruguay confirmed on the same evening, both European and island sides advanced, leaving Saudi Arabia bottom of the group with just two points.
Chances Go Begging
Despite dominating periods of play, Cape Verde struggled to convert their opportunities against Saudi Arabia. Jamiro Monteiro came closest in the first half when he broke through the Saudi defence, but goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais made a crucial save. In the second half, the islanders created further chances through Wagner Pina, Kevin Pina, and substitute Laros Duarte, but finishing proved elusive.
Saudi Arabia offered little attacking threat throughout, with Al-Owais rarely forced into serious action. The goalless draw suited both sides' circumstances—Saudi Arabia's elimination already confirmed, and Cape Verde's place in the next round secured through their group performance.
