Senegal demolish Iraq 5-0, push for World Cup knockout stages
Senegal delivered a commanding performance against Iraq, securing a dominant 5-0 victory in their final World Cup group stage match in Toronto. The Lions of Teranga's emphatic win gives them a genuine chance of progressing to the knockout rounds as one of the tournament's eight best third-placed teams, though they await results from other fixtures to confirm their advancement.
The West African side struck early, with Habid Diarra converting from a corner in the fourth minute after Abdoulaye Seck's assist. Iraq's hopes were further dented when Rebin Sulaka received a straight red card shortly after for denying Sadio Mané a clear scoring opportunity, leaving the Iraqis to face the remainder of the match with ten men.
Senegal capitalised on their numerical advantage with ruthless efficiency. Lamine Camara and Sarr combined for the second goal following a defensive blunder, before substitute Pape Gueye struck twice within minutes of entering the pitch. Iliman Ndiaye rounded off the scoring with a powerful 20-yard strike to complete the rout.
Manager Pape Thiaw's side must now monitor other group results to determine whether their superior goal difference and third-place finish will be enough to secure qualification.
