Salah Hamstring Scare Puts Egypt's World Cup Run in Doubt Ahead of Australia Clash
Egypt's hopes of progressing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been dealt a serious blow after captain Mohamed Salah was diagnosed with a hamstring strain, the Egyptian Football Association confirmed on Sunday. The Liverpool forward is one of Africa's most prominent players at the tournament, and his fitness will be closely monitored ahead of the Pharaohs' knockout fixture.
Scans revealed the extent of the injury, and Salah has wasted no time beginning treatment as Egypt's medical team works around the clock to make him available. The Round of 32 clash against Australia is scheduled for 3rd July at Dallas Stadium, leaving limited time for recovery.
The injury concerns do not end with Salah. Left back Ahmed Fattouh has suffered a hamstring tear and is widely expected to miss the Australia match entirely, according to the Egypt FA's official statement. Defender Mohamed Abdelmonem is also a doubt after sustaining severe ankle bruising, though medics are hopeful he can be declared fit in time.
The Egyptian FA confirmed: "Regarding Ahmed Fattouh's injury, he is suffering from a hamstring tear, making it difficult for him to recover in time for the Round of 32 match against Australia at the FIFA World Cup 2026, while Mohamed Abdelmonem has suffered severe ankle bruising and is being readied for the game."
Egypt's participation in the expanded 48-team World Cup has been a historic one for African football, and the Pharaohs will be desperate to keep their campaign alive despite the mounting injury crisis. African football followers, including Ghanaians who have watched AFCON rivals Egypt with keen interest, will be hoping Salah recovers in time to feature.
