Manya Krobo Community Bank doubles profit to GH₵9.3m, eyes expansion push

Manya Krobo Community Bank PLC has delivered a sharp turnaround in financial performance, with profit after tax surging 131% to GH₵9.3 million in 2025, signalling growing confidence in Ghana's community banking sector even as it navigates regulatory reforms and digital disruption.

The bank's pre-tax profit more than doubled to GH₵15.4 million, driven by a 45% jump in net operating income from GH₵41.3 million to GH₵59.8 million. Improved returns on loans and investments, alongside steady fee income, underpinned the expansion. The results were unveiled at the institution's 45th Annual General Meeting, where the Board flagged the growth as evidence of resilience amid broader economic pressures.

Balance sheet expansion and shareholder returns

Beyond profitability, Manya Krobo's balance sheet expanded markedly. Total assets climbed 27% to GH₵335.1 million, while customer deposits rose equally to GH₵288.3 million, reflecting growing depositor confidence. Gross loans advanced 35% to GH₵99.6 million, outpacing the asset growth rate—a sign the bank is deploying capital more aggressively into lending. Shareholders' funds improved 47% to GH₵27.5 million, boosting the Capital Adequacy Ratio to 16.92%, comfortably above the Bank of Ghana's 10% floor.

The board has recommended a dividend of GH₵2.33 million (GH₵0.0504 per share), up from GH₵1.53 million in 2024. Chairman Patrick Amannor Buckor said the payout balances rewarding shareholders with retaining earnings for expansion and capital strengthening. Operating expenses rose 28% to GH₵44.4 million, partly reflecting higher credit provisions as the bank manages risks from rapid lending growth—a prudent measure the Board emphasised as the bank expands its customer base.

Digital transformation and the community banking pivot

A significant milestone was Manya Krobo's rebranding from Rural Bank to Community Bank, part of broader Bank of Ghana reforms repositioning these institutions as modern, inclusive financial entities rather than niche rural lenders. Chief Executive Godfred Asante Hanson outlined a 2026–2028 strategic roadmap centred on digital transformation, operational efficiency and enhanced customer service. The bank is constructing a new banking complex at Ashiyie in Accra to strengthen its physical and operational footprint, a major capital project signalling confidence in future growth.

Management intends to pursue deliberate share mobilisation—both deepening existing shareholder commitments and attracting new investors—whilst expanding the loan portfolio cautiously, diversifying income and tightening risk controls. Technology investments are expected to reduce service turnaround times and streamline processes to bolster competitiveness within the community banking sector.

Why it matters for Ghana

Manya Krobo's performance comes at a critical juncture for Ghana's financial sector. Community banks serve as crucial intermediaries between the formal banking system and grassroots entrepreneurs, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas. The bank's growth underscores the latent demand for accessible credit and savings products outside major urban centres. Its profitability also validates the Bank of Ghana's recapitalisation and rebranding agenda, which seeks to modernise community banking to withstand competitive pressures from digital fintechs and larger banks.

The bank also invested GH₵393,313 in corporate social responsibility, including GH₵103,000 in scholarships for disadvantaged students, and adopted an Environmental, Social and Governance policy aligned with Bank of Ghana principles—reflecting broader ESG expectations among regulators and stakeholders. Plans to increase stated capital from GH₵7.7 million to GH₵11.9 million by 2028 signal long-term ambition, though execution will depend on share uptake and sustained profitability amid Ghana's macroeconomic headwinds.
