Ghana to host Pan-African fashion materials fair, positioning Accra as textile hub

Ghana is set to become the epicentre of Africa's textile and fashion materials trade when the Alternative Fashion Fabric Fair (Alt.FFF) launches in Accra on 19th September 2026. Hosted at The Palms Convention Centre, La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, the inaugural event marks a significant shift in how the continent's fashion ecosystem operates, placing raw materials and production capabilities at the forefront rather than finished garments.

Organised by Fashion Forum Africa and backed by key Ghanaian institutions including the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) Garments, Textiles and Leather Sector, the National Commission on Culture, and the Institute of Textiles & Fashion Professionals Ghana (ITFP-Ghana), the fair represents a deliberate strategy to strengthen intra-African supply chains and sourcing. Under the theme "Where Materials Speak Before Fashion," Alt.FFF will showcase fibres, fabrics, leather, sustainable materials, trims and other resources that form the foundation of Africa's £30-billion-plus creative industries.

A different approach to African fashion

Unlike traditional fashion events that celebrate designers and finished collections, Alt.FFF deliberately turns the spotlight on the invisible backbone of the industry: textile producers, material innovators, artisans, manufacturers and leather businesses. This repositioning is strategic. Ghana's garment and textile sector has long struggled with import dependency, with African designers and manufacturers often sourcing fabrics and raw materials from Asia rather than neighbouring countries—a pattern that drains currency and weakens regional economic integration.

Makeba Boateng, Founder of Fashion Forum Africa and Lead Curator of Alt.FFF, explained the philosophy: "Alt.FFF is about shifting the conversation. We want people to look beyond the finished garment and ask: Where did the material come from? Who produced it? What capabilities exist within Africa? And how can we create stronger business relationships around them?"

The fair will attract fabric and fibre producers, leather businesses, designers, manufacturers, buyers, retailers, sourcing professionals, investors and fashion enthusiasts. For Ghanaian textile producers and artisans, the event offers rare direct access to continental buyers and retailers without intermediaries—a competitive advantage that could unlock new export markets.

Why it matters for Ghana

Ghana's textile and garment industry employs thousands directly and supports countless artisans and small-scale producers. However, the sector faces chronic challenges: rising input costs, limited access to quality raw materials at competitive prices, and competition from cheaper Asian imports. Alt.FFF directly addresses these pain points by creating a unified marketplace where Ghanaian producers can showcase capabilities, negotiate bulk orders, and forge long-term partnerships with African retailers and manufacturers.

Hosting the fair in Accra elevates Ghana's profile as a regional fashion and creative hub. The endorsement by Ghana Tourism Authority and Creative Arts Agency signals government commitment to positioning the country as a destination for creative industries trade. This could attract investment, create employment in logistics and hospitality, and inspire similar initiatives.

Additionally, the fair aligns with ECOWAS economic integration goals, promoting the free movement of goods and strengthening West African intra-regional trade. For young Ghanaian designers and fashion entrepreneurs, visibility within a Pan-African marketplace opens doors to suppliers and distribution networks previously inaccessible.

What to expect at the launch

The fair will run from 9am to 8pm and feature curated showcases of African materials, live networking opportunities, and educational experiences highlighting the heritage and innovation in textile production. Exhibitors will include established fabric manufacturers alongside emerging social enterprises focused on sustainable materials.
