Ghana Armed Forces Kicks Off Major Security Exercise in Oti and Upper East Regions

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has begun a three-week military exercise across the Oti and Upper East regions, aimed at strengthening operational readiness and improving collaboration between security agencies. Exercise Starlight Stretch II, organised by GAF Central Command, officially commenced on Monday, 6th July 2026, with an opening ceremony in Nkwanta. The training initiative forms part of the Ghana Army's 2026/2027 Training Year.

The exercise, running in both Nkwanta and Bawku, involves personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies working together to enhance operational preparedness and inter-agency coordination. According to a GAF statement, the training is designed to reinforce national security efforts and improve the effectiveness of joint operations among military units and partner organisations.

Nkwanta South Municipal Chief Executive Joseph Awal Antwi expressed confidence in the GAF's capacity to restore and sustain peace in the region, pledging Assembly support for the exercise. Lieutenant Colonel Michael Naah, Commanding Officer of the 3 Infantry Battalion, emphasised that the training would strengthen interoperability and improve joint operational effectiveness.

The Lieutenant Colonel stressed the importance of strict compliance with exercise directives and safety protocols, and called on troops to remain adaptable and professional whilst working with other security agencies and civilian stakeholders on emerging security challenges. The exercise comes as security agencies intensify coordination efforts in areas facing ongoing threats, particularly Bawku, where sporadic violence has underscored the need for sustained security operations.
