Ghana's Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has adopted a measured diplomatic approach to allegations levelled against him by Ghana Gold Board Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, stepping back from earlier threats of legal action. In an interview on JoyNews' The Probe on Sunday, August 23, the Effutu MP signalled he would not be drawn into what he described as a deliberate political distraction from more pressing national issues.

Afenyo-Markin had previously posted on Facebook indicating he would pursue legal remedies over claims describing him as an "extortionist" and making other defamatory allegations. However, less than 24 hours later, he chose restraint instead, invoking a biblical analogy about Jesus Christ's response to false accusations. "In the Bible, Jesus was accused; wild allegations. He kept quiet and watched them," Afenyo-Markin told JoyNews, signalling his determination not to allow emotions to dictate his response.

The Minority Leader stressed that his position as a senior parliamentary figure carried expectations of maturity and conduct befitting the opposition's role. He emphasised that reacting emotionally to attacks would undermine the Minority's credibility and ability to hold government accountable on substantive issues. "When you are dealing with situations, the people of Ghana expect a certain level of maturity from me," he explained, noting that partisan attacks are part of the political landscape but must not distract from parliamentary oversight duties.

Afenyo-Markin suggested that the allegations against him were part of a coordinated political strategy designed to divert public attention from the Bank of Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) and the reported losses associated with it. "I was a majority leader. I know how government operates. I know how government can divert attention," he stated.
