Zimbabwean Star Divine Lunga Escapes Gun Attack in Johannesburg
Zimbabwean footballer Divine Lunga has escaped unhurt after gunfire targeted his vehicle in Johannesburg on Sunday. The 31-year-old defender, who plays for South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Zimbabwe's national team, was travelling through the inner-city suburb of Hillbrow when an unknown gunman opened fire on his car.
According to reports, Lunga was driving with his younger brother en route to church when the attack occurred. South African authorities suggest the suspect may have mistaken him for an undercover police officer. The South African Police Service confirmed they are investigating a case of attempted murder, though no arrests have been made at this stage.
Lunga, a defender with 21 international caps for Zimbabwe, was part of the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Since joining Sundowns in 2021, he has been instrumental in the club's success, helping them secure four domestic league titles and their second African Champions League trophy in May.
Zimbabwe's national team, known as the Warriors, responded to the incident by posting a picture of Lunga in prayer with the caption 'In God we trust.' Neither Sundowns nor the national federation has issued formal statements regarding the shooting. The incident highlights ongoing security concerns in South Africa, which continues to grapple with one of the world's highest murder rates.
