Police Launch Manhunt After Armed Men Shoot Community Officer in Central Region

Armed Attack Leaves Officer Injured

The Ghana Police Service is searching for unidentified gunmen who shot Emmanuel Agyapong, a 27-year-old Community Police Assistant, during a violent attack at Dwakessiem near Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality on Thursday, 25 June. Mr Agyapong sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh and is receiving specialist care at Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after initial treatment at Dunkwa-on-Offin Municipal Hospital.

According to Upper Denkyira East Municipal Police Commander DSP Simon Boavo, the incident began when Mr Agyapong had an altercation with two motorbike riders between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. One rider was injured during the confrontation and left, but returned minutes later with armed accomplices carrying cutlasses and a pump-action shotgun. When tensions escalated, one suspect fired the weapon, striking the officer in the thigh. The group then discharged a warning shot and fled before residents could pursue them.

DSP Boavo told media that investigators are pursuing multiple leads to identify and arrest the suspects. He commended the community's concern but noted the incident might have been prevented with prompt intervention to de-escalate the initial confrontation.

Police have appealed to the public to provide information on the suspects' whereabouts and urged citizens to support law enforcement officers carrying out their duties. The shooting has renewed concerns about violence targeting security personnel in the region.
