Police hunt gunmen after Community Assistant shot in Central Region

Manhunt launched after shooting incident

Ghana Police Service has launched an intensive investigation following an armed attack on Emmanuel Agyapong, a 27-year-old Community Police Assistant, in Dwakessiem near Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality. The shooting occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, 25 June, leaving the victim with a gunshot wound to his right thigh.

Mr Agyapong was initially treated at Dunkwa-on-Offin Municipal Hospital before being referred to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for specialist care. According to Upper Denkyira East Municipal Police Commander DSP Simon Boavo, preliminary investigations suggest the violence erupted following an altercation between the Community Police Assistant and occupants of a motorbike.

During the confrontation, one of the riders sustained an injury before leaving the scene, allegedly threatening to return. The individual later reappeared with a group of armed men, some carrying cutlasses and a pump-action shotgun. When the situation escalated, one suspect allegedly fired the shotgun, striking Mr Agyapong. The assailants also discharged a warning shot before fleeing, hindering pursuit by residents.

DSP Boavo stated that investigators are pursuing all available leads to identify and arrest the suspects. He appealed to the public to provide information and support law enforcement, whilst noting that earlier intervention by bystanders might have prevented the violence from occurring.

The incident has intensified concerns about attacks on security personnel and underscores the need for stronger community cooperation with law enforcement officers during their operations.
