Ghana Book Club Celebrates Literary Pioneer Efua Sutherland With Month-Long Tribute
Honouring a Literary Legacy
The Ghana Book Club has launched a special initiative naming June as "Efua Sutherland Month" in recognition of the legendary Ghanaian playwright, author, and cultural pioneer born on 27th June 1924. The tribute aims to encourage readers—particularly young Africans—to engage with Sutherland's groundbreaking works and explore her profound influence on contemporary African storytelling and literature.
Efua Sutherland's contributions to Ghanaian culture extended beyond the written page. She established the Ghana Drama Studio and was instrumental in developing theatre as an educational and cultural force across the nation. Her work merged traditional Ghanaian folklore and oral traditions with modern themes, creating narratives that served as tools for education, cultural preservation, and national identity.
Key Works in the Spotlight
During this commemorative month, the Ghana Book Club will focus on some of Sutherland's most influential plays and writings, including The Marriage of Anansewa, Edufa, Foriwa, and The Road Makers. These works showcase her unique ability to weave indigenous storytelling techniques into contemporary discussions, cementing her place as a foundational figure in modern African literature.
Lassy Lore, a founding member of the Ghana Book Club, reflected on the initiative's importance: "Efua Sutherland taught us that our stories define us, preserve our heritage, and guide our future." The club, established five years ago with support from EPP Bookshop, has grown into a vibrant literary community hosting discussions with established and emerging African authors.
Virtual Celebration Planned
The club will host virtual reading sessions and discussions on Sunday, 28th June at 5pm via Zoom, inviting participants to deepen their appreciation of Sutherland's legacy and inspire a new generation of African storytellers. The Ghana Book Club is supported by partners including Ameyawdebrah.com, yemmy.com, and aamn.africa.
