Police investigate suspicious death as decomposed body discovered in Somanya bush

Investigation underway

The Somanya District Police Command is investigating the death of an unidentified woman whose decomposing body was discovered hanging from a tree in a bush at Brigade, a suburb of Somanya, on Thursday. The body, estimated to be that of a woman aged 30-40 years, was found after residents reported a strong smell in the area.

Police Commander ASP Nana Akomeah told the Ghana News Agency that officers found the body with what appeared to be cloth tied around the neck. He said preliminary findings suggest possible foul play, with signs indicating the body may have been assaulted. The advanced state of decomposition has made immediate identification impossible, though investigators believe the body has been at the location for approximately three weeks.

Identity search ongoing

Police have been reviewing missing persons reports to identify the deceased. A man reported his wife missing on 17 June, and was invited to view the body at Yilo Krobo District Hospital mortuary, but confirmed the deceased was not his wife. Authorities have also contacted the University of Environment and Sustainable Development regarding a reported missing student, though decomposition has prevented confirmation of identity.

The body has been transferred to Yilo Krobo District Hospital for preservation and autopsy. ASP Akomeah said the autopsy report will be crucial in determining the cause of death and circumstances surrounding the incident. He added that police will work with the Environmental Protection Agency to fumigate the area and prevent public health risks.

The Police Commander appealed to residents to report missing persons and suspicious activities to support investigations.
