Patrick Vieira takes Senegal job: Arsenal legend returns to manage nation of his birth
Patrick Vieira, the legendary Arsenal midfielder and former France captain, has been named the new head coach of Senegal's national team. The 50-year-old's appointment marks a significant moment for West African football, as the Dakar-born tactician returns to manage the country of his birth after a distinguished playing and coaching career across Europe.
Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, whose contract was terminated following Senegal's elimination in the last 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The Senegal Football Federation described the appointment as reflecting the nation's ambition to strengthen its technical infrastructure and achieve greater sporting success on the continental stage.
A storied playing career and European pedigree
Vieira left Senegal aged eight to settle in France, where he became one of European football's most decorated midfielders. He won 107 caps for France, including victories at the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship. His club career saw him claim three Premier League titles and four FA Cups during his time at Arsenal, alongside silverware won at AC Milan, Inter Milan and Manchester City. He retired from playing in 2011.
His managerial experience includes spells at New York City, OGC Nice, Crystal Palace and RC Strasbourg. Most recently, he departed Genoa by mutual consent in November 2024, having guided the Italian club to Serie A safety with a 13th-place finish during the 2024-25 season.
What this means for Senegal's continental ambitions
Vieira's first competitive matches will come next month in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. His appointment arrives at a turbulent time for Senegalese football, following the controversial circumstances surrounding the 2025 Afcon final against Morocco. That match saw Senegal's players walk off the pitch in protest at a stoppage-time penalty decision, with the drama ultimately resulting in Morocco being declared tournament winners by a Confederation of African Football appeals board in March. Senegal have since lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with a hearing scheduled for 8 October.
The new Senegal coach will be tasked with rebuilding confidence in the national programme and refocusing the squad on qualifying for the 2027 Afcon tournament in Ghana. His experience navigating high-pressure situations at elite European clubs, combined with his personal connection to Senegal, positions him to provide the steady leadership the Teranga Lions require during this period of transition.
