Nigerian Instagram Influencer Arrested in $28m Cocaine Bust with Links to UK Drug Network

Nigerian authorities have arrested a prominent social media influencer accused of being a key player in a major international drug trafficking operation. Afolabi Kazeem Michael, known online as "KC Luxury" and boasting around 700,000 Instagram followers, was detained at Lagos' Murtala Mohammed International Airport whilst attempting to board a business-class flight to Paris.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 184.5 kilograms of cocaine valued at approximately $28 million from a Lagos courier facility on August 3. Investigators say the shipment formed part of a sophisticated smuggling network routing cocaine from South American suppliers through Nigeria to destinations across the UK, Europe and Asia. Michael, aged 49, had cultivated a public image as a legitimate businessman specialising in gold, jewellery and luxury commodities—a common cover used to explain unexplained wealth on social media.

NDLEA chairman Buba Marwa characterised Michael as the Nigerian "arrowhead" orchestrating the operation domestically. Operatives apprehended him at the boarding gate after intelligence indicated his imminent departure. Authorities recovered more than $12,840 in mixed currency (euros, pounds and naira) plus expensive jewellery from his possession at arrest.

Network Extends Beyond Nigeria

A second suspect, 33-year-old Lawal Mujab Kehinde, has also been arrested. The NDLEA alleges Kehinde collaborated with a logistics company involved in transporting the cocaine and prepared shipments for export in exchange for payment. According to the agency, the network extended internationally, with suspected accomplices in the UK already arrested by British authorities.

Neither suspect has made public statements regarding the allegations, and neither has yet appeared before a court. The investigation appears ongoing, with authorities indicating more individuals may face charges as the network's full structure is uncovered.

This case underscores a critical reality affecting West Africa broadly: the region's vulnerability to international drug trafficking networks. Nigeria's strategic location, major ports and diaspora connections make it a crucial transit hub for narcotics destined for European markets. Ghana faces identical pressures, with law enforcement agencies regularly intercepting cocaine and other hard drugs at Kotoka International Airport and the Port of Tema.

The KC Luxury arrest demonstrates how traffickers exploit social media influence and the appearance of legitimate wealth to obscure criminal activity. Ghanaian customs and anti-narcotics officials have repeatedly warned that similar schemes operate locally, with Instagram influencers and self-styled entrepreneurs sometimes serving as money launderers or logistics coordinators for international syndicates. The case highlights the cross-border nature of West African drug trafficking and reinforces the need for regional cooperation between NDLEA, Ghana's Narcotics Control Board and other law enforcement agencies.

The involvement of what appeared to be professional logistics infrastructure also illustrates how criminals exploit legitimate shipping and courier services—a vulnerability ECOWAS nations must address collectively through standardised port security and enhanced cargo screening protocols.
