Over 620,000 Ghanaian Students Receive 2026 BECE Results; WAEC Sanctions 768 for Exam Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council has released provisional results for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination, marking a significant milestone for over 620,000 Ghanaian junior high school students who sat for the crucial national qualification. The results, now available through schools and WAEC's online portal, determine progression pathways for candidates seeking admission to senior secondary institutions across the country.

Scale of 2026 BECE Examination

A total of 620,243 candidates from 20,789 schools participated in this year's examination, comprising 304,415 males and 315,828 females. The examination was conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide and included special accommodation for vulnerable candidates. WAEC noted that 136 candidates with visual impairment, 282 with hearing assessment needs and 510 requiring other forms of test accommodation were supported throughout the examination period. However, 3,601 registered candidates were absent from the examination without valid explanation.

Widespread Examination Malpractice Concerns

WAEC's investigation into examination irregularities revealed significant disciplinary action against candidates found culpable. The Council cancelled subject results for 496 candidates and entire examination results for 105 candidates. An additional 119 candidates had subject results withheld whilst 48 had their entire results withheld pending further investigations. Most notably, the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been placed under scrutiny, with final decisions expected by 31 August 2026. These figures suggest widespread concerns about examination integrity that extend beyond individual candidate misconduct to systemic issues affecting entire schools.
