Over 620,000 Ghanaian pupils await 2026 BECE results as WAEC announces provisional release

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), marking a crucial milestone for over 620,000 Ghanaian junior secondary school candidates who sat the examination across the country. The results are now available through schools and WAEC's official website, though thousands remain in limbo pending investigations into examination breaches.

A total of 620,243 candidates from 20,789 schools registered for the 2026 BECE, comprising 304,415 male and 315,828 female students. The examination, conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide, included special provisions for 928 candidates with disabilities and assessment needs—136 with visual impairment, 282 with hearing assessment needs, and 510 requiring other test accommodations. However, 3,601 registered candidates were absent from the examination, reducing the final number of test-takers significantly.

Sanctions and Withheld Results

WAEC's Final Awards and Examiners' Appointment Committee has taken disciplinary action against candidates found to have violated examination regulations. In total, 105 candidates have had their entire results cancelled, whilst a further 496 candidates face cancellation of subject-specific results. Additionally, 48 candidates have had their complete results withheld pending further investigation, and 119 candidates are facing subject result withholding.

Most significantly, the results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools remain withheld for further scrutiny. WAEC stated that these withheld results may either be cancelled or released based on the outcome of ongoing investigations by 31 August 2026. Affected candidates have been directed to visit the dedicated portal at https://irreg.waecgh.org to access information about the actions taken against them and receive guidance on next steps. Heads of schools and proprietors can monitor the status of affected candidates using their results listing logins.

The BECE serves as the gateway examination for Ghanaian students transitioning from junior secondary education to senior secondary school, making result delays a significant concern for educational progression. The large number of withheld results—nearly 2,900 candidates—raises questions about examination integrity and the adequacy of invigilation across the 2,237 test centres. Parents, students and schools are now navigating an uncertain timeline, with final resolution not expected until August, potentially disrupting school placements and academic calendars.

The sanctions announced by WAEC underscore the Council's commitment to maintaining examination standards, yet the scale of irregularities detected—over 700 individual cases and 229 affected schools—suggests systemic challenges in examination administration. WAEC's warning against fraudsters claiming to alter results also highlights growing concerns about credential fraud in Ghana's education sector.

WAEC has emphasised that its results are secured and can be authenticated, cautioning the public against false claims by fraudsters. Candidates can access provisional results through three channels: directly from their schools via Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education; through WAEC's official website; or, for those affected by irregularities, through the dedicated portal for further details.

The Council expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, school heads, supervisors, invigilators and examiners for their collaboration in conducting the examination and releasing results.
