NPP Holds National Officers' Elections in Kumasi; 7,121 Delegates to Vote for Party Leadership
Ghana's opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is moving forward with its internal democratic processes, hosting national officers' elections on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The Electoral Commission will oversee voting by 7,121 delegates, marking the final stage of the party's nationwide reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general election cycle.
The Election Landscape
A competitive field of 47 aspirants is seeking positions across nine elected roles within the party's national structure. The most closely watched contest is the National Chairperson race, where four heavyweight candidates are vying: former National Chairmen Paul Afoko and John Boadu, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe. The General Secretary position has drawn four contenders, including incumbent Justin Frimpong Kodua alongside former MPs Eugene Boakye Antwi and Sylvester Tetteh, plus Dr Charles Dwamena.
Other fiercely contested roles include thirteen aspirants for Vice-Chairperson positions and seven candidates competing for the National Organiser post. The party will also elect officials for the National Treasurer, National Women's Organiser, National Youth Organiser and National Nasara Organiser positions. Only the National Communications Director position goes uncontested, with Dennis Miracles Aboagye as the sole candidate.
Electoral Readiness and Procedural Safeguards
The Electoral Commission has confirmed full preparedness for the exercise. Samuel Kwaah, Director of Electoral Services at the EC, confirmed that all materials have been deployed to the Ashanti Region and ballot papers are ready. The commission will oversee the entire voting process, with ballot papers having been received by the Elections Committee and subsequently held in police custody for safeguarding.
Saturday's proceedings will unfold in two phases. The NPP conference—featuring addresses and proposed constitutional amendments—will occur first, after which the Electoral Commission will assume control of the venue for voting, anticipated to commence around midday. Voting may extend beyond midday if necessary, with final closing times to be determined following consultations between the party and candidates.
Delegate identification will utilise party membership cards, voter identification cards, or Ghana Cards. The EC has issued explicit warnings against electoral misconduct, including photographing marked ballots or directing others how to vote, both of which constitute electoral offences under Ghana's electoral regulations.
What This Means for Ghana's Opposition
These elections represent a critical juncture for the NPP as it rebuilds its organisational structure following its defeat in the 2024 general election. The party has already selected Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for 2028 following a presidential primary in January 2026. The election of a new national executive will shape the party's strategy, messaging, and internal cohesion heading into a potential period of opposition governance.
The competitive nature of these races—particularly the chairmanship contest among seasoned party figures—reflects internal debates within the NPP about its direction and priorities. How these elections unfold and which faction-aligned candidates emerge victorious will influence the party's capacity to organise effectively, mobilise supporters, and challenge the incumbent government in subsequent elections.
Frederick Opare-Ansah, Chairman of the National Officers' Elections Committee, has emphasised the importance of unity and camaraderie among delegates, urging them to exercise their franchise freely without intimidation and to maintain the spirit of party solidarity throughout the process.
