NPP holds make-or-break executive elections in Kumasi as Bawumia eyes 2028 comeback
The opposition New Patriotic Party held a pivotal internal election on Saturday in Kumasi to reshape its national leadership, as it gears up for a bid to reclaim power from the governing National Democratic Congress in 2028. The elections at Baba Yara Sports Stadium saw approximately 7,100 delegates from across Ghana vote to elect the party's top officials, marking a crucial phase in the NPP's restructuring following its 2024 general election loss.
The exercise was supervised by the Electoral Commission, with 31 voting centres established within the stadium to streamline the process and prevent voting from extending into the night. The party's National Officers Elections Committee managed the internal arrangements, whilst electoral officials and accredited agents from various candidates monitored proceedings at each centre.
The contest: 46 candidates competing for key roles
A total of 46 candidates contested for nine key positions on the ballot. The most competitive race was the Vice-Chairperson contest, where 13 candidates vied for three posts. The General Secretary, National Organiser, and National Treasurer races each had four contestants, with the incumbent General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, seeking re-election.
For the top job of National Chairperson, four candidates competed: former General Secretary John Boadu, Sammy Crabbe, former National Chairman Paul Afoko, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko. The National Youth Organiser race saw six candidates, whilst the Women's Organiser position was contested between Hajia Safia Mohammed and Mavis Hawa Koomson. Dennis Miracles Aboagye ran unopposed for National Communications Director after his rival withdrew.
Initial nominations had attracted 47 aspirants, but National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha withdrew from the National Organiser race before voting, bringing the final number to 46 candidates across all positions.
Why it matters for Ghana: Setting the stage for 2028
This election is critical for the NPP as it rebuilds following its loss to the NDC in the 2024 general election. The party's presidential flagbearer for 2028 is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who won the party's presidential primary in January 2026. The newly elected national executives will form the backbone of the party's organisational machinery as it campaigns to return to government.
For Ghana's political landscape, the NPP's internal reorganisation signals the opposition's readiness to mount a credible challenge in the next election cycle. The competitive nature of these elections—particularly with strong candidates contesting top positions—suggests the party is determined to strengthen its structures and appeal to voters. The outcomes will influence the party's strategic direction, messaging, and capacity to mobilise support nationwide.
The 2028 general election remains four years away, but elections like this demonstrate that Ghana's major political parties are already thinking strategically about their positioning and leadership. How the newly elected executives perform in their roles will be closely watched by both party members and the broader electorate as the parties prepare for what is expected to be a closely contested election.
