Nigerian Man's Death in South African Police Custody Sparks Diplomatic Row

A diplomatic dispute has erupted between Nigeria and South Africa following the death of a Nigerian man in police custody last month. South African authorities have firmly rejected claims that the incident is connected to ongoing anti-migrant violence sweeping the country, insisting instead that the man collapsed after being arrested on drug possession charges.

Nigeria's foreign ministry alleged that the Nigerian national died during police interrogation just days before nationwide rallies against undocumented migrants took place. The ministry has warned of unspecified action if attacks on Nigerian citizens continue, raising tensions between the two nations.

According to South African police, officers arrested the man at his Pretoria apartment during an intelligence-driven drugs operation. The spokesperson confirmed that substances were recovered at the scene and that the man collapsed whilst being transported to a police station. Paramedics were called but could not revive him.

South Africa's foreign ministry has called on Nigeria to submit any evidence regarding the death but has not directly addressed the allegations made by its Nigerian counterpart. A police watchdog has been notified and will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances.

The incident occurs amid a surge in anti-migrant protests across South Africa, which rights groups say have been fuelled by deep-rooted issues including crime and unemployment. Whilst mostly peaceful, some demonstrations have turned violent, with foreign nationals attacked and foreign-owned shops looted.
