NDC Forges Ahead With Grassroots Overhaul as 15,000 Vie for Constituency Leadership

By · · 3 min read · 21 views

The National Democratic Congress is executing an ambitious restructuring of its grassroots apparatus this weekend, with approximately 15,000 aspirants competing for executive positions across all 276 constituencies nationwide. The exercise, scheduled for Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2026, represents a significant mobilisation effort as Ghana's opposition party gears up for the 2028 presidential race.

The party is filling nine key positions per constituency, including chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer, organiser, deputy organiser, communications officer, women's organiser and youth organiser. Elected officials will be tasked with coordinating party activities, mobilising members at the local level, managing constituency structures and implementing national party programmes within their communities.

The Nkwanta North Complication

The planned elections face legal complications in Nkwanta North, where the High Court in Dambai issued an interlocutory injunction barring the NDC from holding polls in that constituency. The court order also prevents the party from relying on a register of branch executives compiled after elections held in June and July 2026.

However, the NDC's Acting Director of IT and Elections, Mahdi Jibrill, signalled on Thursday that the party intends to proceed with Nkwanta North elections as scheduled. Jibrill stated that party headquarters had not received formal service of the court order, and therefore the election would continue. The assertion suggests potential tensions between the judicial order and the party's determination to maintain its election timeline.

Why It Matters for Ghana

The NDC's constituency executive elections carry broader significance for Ghana's political landscape and democratic processes. Opposition parties typically use such grassroots elections to build momentum and consolidate party machinery ahead of general elections. A well-organised constituency structure is critical for voter mobilisation, campaign coordination and translating national party strategy into local action.

The scale of this exercise—15,000 aspirants across 276 constituencies—underscores the NDC's commitment to reinvigorating its local presence following the 2024 general elections. For voters, a functioning opposition party with active local structures serves an important democratic function, holding government accountable and providing electoral alternatives. For the broader political environment, well-organised parties contribute to competitive elections and robust democratic participation.

The Nkwanta North court injunction raises questions about potential internal party disputes and the procedures governing branch executive registration. Such conflicts, if unresolved, could create governance challenges for the party at constituency level and potentially affect electoral administration in that constituency during the 2028 general elections.

The Electoral Commission and Ghana Police Service are supporting the exercise, with security provided throughout polling across the constituencies. The institutional involvement of these bodies signals recognition of the elections' importance to Ghana's political stability and party development ahead of the next national polls.
