Nana Ama Bonsu Officially Installed as 15th Asantehemaa at Manhyia Palace
Nana Ama Bonsu has been officially unveiled as the 15th Asantehemaa (Queen Mother) of the Ashanti Kingdom in a historic ceremony held at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Monday, July 6, 2026. The formal outdooring marked the beginning of a new era for one of Ghana's most revered traditional institutions, with thousands gathering to witness the significant occasion.
The new Queen Mother succeeds Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the 14th Asantehemaa, who passed away on August 7, 2025. Her installation comes nearly a year after her predecessor's death, following the traditional processes required to identify and present a new royal matriarch to the Ashanti people.
The ceremony was a vibrant celebration of Ashanti culture and tradition. Attendees dressed in black and red cloth filled the palace grounds, with songs, chants, and cheers welcoming Nana Ama Bonsu as she was formally introduced to the public. Members of the royal family, traditional leaders, and dignitaries gathered to mark the historic moment.
As the 15th Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Bonsu now holds a position central to the governance and cultural preservation of the Ashanti Kingdom. Her role will involve upholding the values and customs associated with the prestigious stool whilst collaborating with other traditional leaders to protect and advance Asanteman's heritage and traditions.
