Nana Ama Bonsu Officially Enstoled as 15th Asantehemaa, Takes Historic Name Nana Yaa Akyaa II

New Queen Mother Begins Reign Following Traditional Ceremonies

Nana Ama Bonsu has officially assumed her position as the 15th Asantehemaa of the Ashanti Kingdom, taking the stool name Nana Yaa Akyaa II. Her public outdooring on Monday, July 6, 2026, marked the completion of key customary processes in the succession to this revered institution. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, formally introduced and accepted her as the next Queen Mother of Asanteman.

On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Nana Yaa Akyaa II sat in state at the Manhyia Palace to receive homage from traditional authorities, members of the public, and Asanteman subjects. Chiefs, queen mothers, dignitaries, and well-wishers gathered to formally welcome her and pledge their support as she begins her tenure. The ceremony formed part of the essential traditional processes following her enstoolment.

Nana Yaa Akyaa II succeeds the late Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the 14th Asantehemaa, who passed away in August 2025 after serving from 2017. Her stool name revives the historic designation of Nana Yaa Akyaa I, who held the position from 1884 to 1917, connecting her to over a century of Asante leadership.

The Asantehemaa holds one of the most significant traditional offices in Asanteman. As the highest-ranking woman in the Ashanti Kingdom, the Queen Mother preserves Asante customs and traditions whilst serving as an adviser to the Asantehene. A crucial responsibility includes nominating a successor to the Golden Stool when the Asantehene's position becomes vacant, making the role central to the monarchy's continuity.

Following completion of remaining customary rites, including her formal introduction before the Asanteman Traditional Council, Nana Yaa Akyaa II will fully assume her duties as Queen Mother, joining a distinguished lineage of women who have occupied this revered stool since the Ashanti Kingdom's establishment.
