MTN Ghana Clinches Six Awards for Project Excellence, Fibre Expansion Leadership
MTN Ghana has secured six awards at the 2026 Project Management Excellence Awards ceremony, a significant recognition of the telecommunications company's infrastructure delivery capabilities and project governance standards. The accolades, presented by the Project Management Institute Ghana Chapter at the National Project Management Conference, underscore MTN's role in advancing Ghana's digital infrastructure agenda.
The Fibre Go-Big FTTH (Fibre-to-the-Home) Project emerged as the standout achievement, earning MTN Ghana both the Project of the Year and Telecom Project of the Year awards. This initiative expanded broadband access across six regions, surpassing initial targets for homes passed and significantly extending MTN's fibre footprint throughout the country. Alongside this flagship success, the company secured a win in the Project Manager of the Year category for Edward Ohene Antwi Boasiako, with Manuella Asianoa finishing as first runner-up in the same category.
Beyond the fibre project, MTN Ghana's Transformation Office received recognition as first runner-up for PMO (Project Management Office) of the Year, highlighting the internal systems and governance structures supporting the company's capital investment programme. The CS Hardware Expansion Project, which upgraded the company's customer information systems infrastructure, was recognised as second runner-up for IT Project of the Year, reflecting improvements in system capacity and service reliability.
Ghana's Digital Infrastructure Push
The awards reflect broader momentum in Ghana's digital economy development. Fibre-based broadband expansion has become critical infrastructure priority as the country seeks to close digital divides and support economic growth. MTN's achievement in exceeding its own targets suggests accelerating deployment timelines and increasing private sector investment in backbone and last-mile connectivity.
Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, framed the awards within the company's "Ambition 2030" strategic framework, which positions digital solutions as central to Africa's progress. "Every fibre home passed and every system upgraded is a building block of Ambition 2030," Blewett stated, emphasising that Ghana's digital economy foundations depend on reliable, disciplined infrastructure delivery.
William Tetteh, Chief Transformation Officer, stressed that the recognition validates MTN's approach to operational discipline. "Ambition is the easy part. Delivery is key," he said, highlighting that exceeding targets requires tight planning and accountability mechanisms to prevent projects from drifting or overrunning budgets.
Why This Matters for Ghana
Ghana has positioned broadband expansion as essential to achieving middle-income status and digital economy goals. Private sector investment by companies like MTN—coupled with disciplined project delivery—directly impacts how quickly rural and underserved urban areas gain reliable internet access. Fibre infrastructure enables businesses, schools and health facilities to participate in digital services and e-commerce, reducing the digital divide that constrains economic opportunity.
The scale of MTN's fibre expansion across six regions suggests meaningful coverage growth, though full details on which regions and exact home-pass numbers remain unpublished. The recognition of project governance also signals that Ghana's telecom sector is maturing in how it executes capital-intensive programmes—critical given the massive ongoing investment required to meet national broadband targets.
The Project Management Excellence Awards framework itself reflects growing professional standards in Ghana's business environment, with industry bodies recognising that disciplined delivery of complex projects underpins national competitiveness and development outcomes.
