MTN invests $380m in 500 new network sites nationwide, 80 targeting northern Ghana

MTN Ghana is embarking on one of its largest infrastructure expansion drives in recent years, committing $380 million this year alone to deploy 500 new network sites nationwide as part of a broader $1.1 billion investment strategy. The expansion forms part of the telecommunications giant's 30-year milestone celebrations in Ghana and represents a significant push to bridge connectivity gaps, particularly across the northern regions where digital access remains limited.

The northern rollout is particularly ambitious, with 80 new base stations scheduled for construction across all five northern administrative regions. The Northern Region will receive the bulk of the investment with 38 sites, followed by the Savannah Region with 17 sites, Upper East with 14 sites, North East with 11 sites, and Upper West with one additional site. According to Mr. Emmanuel Kwei Afutu, Senior Manager for Base Station Subsystems, this geographical distribution reflects MTN's commitment to equitable coverage expansion.

Digital opportunities for rural Ghana

Beyond mere network expansion, MTN emphasises the transformative potential of improved connectivity in underserved areas. The company projects that enhanced coverage will enable farmers to access market information more effectively, allow students in remote communities to participate in online learning, facilitate digital payment processing for small businesses, and strengthen family communication networks. In regions with security concerns, improved connectivity is expected to support community safety and coordination between civilians and security services.

The infrastructure drive is being underwritten by strong financial performance. MTN Ghana reported a 32.3 percent rise in revenue to 15 billion cedis in the first half of 2026, with profit after tax increasing 46.8 percent to 5.1 billion cedis. The company also remitted 5.6 billion cedis in direct and indirect taxes over the same period, demonstrating its substantial fiscal contribution to the state.

Why this matters for Ghana

This investment addresses critical development challenges facing Ghana, particularly the digital divide between urban and rural areas. The northern regions, historically disadvantaged in telecommunications infrastructure, stand to benefit significantly from improved 4G and mobile money services. Growing demand for digital financial services is evident in MTN's data: mobile money transaction values surged 44.4 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2026, whilst transaction volumes climbed 23.3 percent, suggesting expanding consumer appetite for digital payments.

Beyond commercial operations, MTN is investing in human capital development through the MTN Ghana Foundation. The MTN Skills Academy targets training over 100,000 young Ghanaians in digital and financial literacy, addressing a critical skills gap. The Bright Scholarship scheme has already supported more than 1,200 students, whilst water, sanitation and hygiene projects have been rolled out in schools across the northern regions.

However, MTN acknowledges persistent challenges. Affordability barriers and digital literacy gaps continue to limit digital inclusion in many communities. Mr. Afutu called for sustained collaboration between the private sector, government, regulators and communities to overcome these structural obstacles and ensure that expanded infrastructure translates into genuine opportunity access for ordinary Ghanaians.
