Mahama commissions Akatsi North police headquarters, stresses maintenance culture

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned the newly completed Akatsi North District Police Headquarters in the Volta Region, using the occasion to emphasise the critical importance of maintenance culture among Ghana Police Service personnel. The facility, located at Ave Dakpa, was formally inaugurated on Friday, July 17, marking a significant investment in policing infrastructure across the country.

In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama challenged officers stationed at the facility to regard it as their own property and ensure it remains in excellent condition. He stressed that government investments in public infrastructure could only deliver lasting value if those who use them daily took active responsibility for their upkeep, rather than waiting for deterioration to require expensive rehabilitation.

A call for shared responsibility

The President highlighted a broader principle: that maintaining public buildings should not be left solely to government resources but should become a collective responsibility among users. He encouraged police personnel to conduct routine upkeep and undertake minor repairs as needed, emphasising that such tasks need not be expensive or burdensome.

"I hope that the police officers will have a high sense of maintenance so that five years' time when I come back, this District Police Headquarters will still be looking the same as we commissioned it today," President Mahama stated. He further stressed that officers should take initiative in addressing minor cosmetic issues, noting that painting and basic maintenance supplies are affordable when purchased collectively by staff members.

The President instructed officers not to wait for government officials to address maintenance needs, pointing out that regional ministers and other authorities should not bear the sole burden of keeping facilities in good condition.

Infrastructure strengthening across Ghana

The commissioning of the Akatsi North District Police Headquarters forms part of a broader government initiative to strengthen policing infrastructure nationwide. The new facility is designed to provide officers with a more conducive working environment whilst enhancing operational efficiency and improving police visibility and response capabilities within the district and surrounding communities.

The project aims to support improved security service delivery and demonstrate the government's commitment to equipping law enforcement with adequate facilities. The ceremony drew together government officials, traditional authorities, security personnel and local residents, reflecting widespread community support for the infrastructure development.

Why it matters for Ghana

The emphasis on maintenance culture carries significant implications for Ghana's public infrastructure sector, which has historically struggled with deterioration of government-invested facilities. By framing maintenance as a shared responsibility rather than a purely governmental function, the message addresses a systemic challenge affecting schools, hospitals, police stations and other public buildings across the country.

For Volta Region residents, the Akatsi North headquarters represents improved law enforcement capacity and enhanced security responsiveness. The facility upgrade may contribute to better crime prevention and community policing in the district. However, the success of such investments ultimately depends on sustained institutional commitment to maintenance—a lesson applicable far beyond this single police station to Ghana's broader infrastructure landscape.

President Mahama's remarks underscore the philosophy that protecting public assets is essential to ensuring future generations continue to benefit from investments made with limited public resources, a principle that extends to schools, healthcare facilities and other critical infrastructure serving Ghanaian communities.
