Kofi Wayo, Outspoken Ghanaian Politician and Founder of the United Renaissance Party, Dies at 71

Charles Eric Kofi Wayo, popularly known as 'Chuck', one of Ghana's most colourful and outspoken political figures, passed away in the early hours of Saturday, 7th November 2026 at Nyaho Clinic in Accra. He was 71 years old. A death announcement circulated on the day confirmed the news, though his family is yet to announce funeral arrangements.

Wayo, who resided in East Legon, leaves behind a legacy as a man who was never afraid to speak his mind — often courting controversy, but equally earning respect from many Ghanaians who appreciated his willingness to challenge authority across party lines.

From parliamentary hopeful to party founder

Kofi Wayo first came to wider national attention in the early 2000s, when his sharp criticism of the then-ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government earned him significant public notice. He subsequently aligned himself with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), contesting the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat on the NPP ticket during the 2000 general elections — though he was unsuccessful, losing to the incumbent candidate.

His association with the NPP did not last long. After the party came to power in January 2001, Wayo grew increasingly critical of President John Agyekum Kufuor's administration, particularly regarding governance and economic management. His outspokenness strained his relationship with the party, and he eventually parted ways with them entirely.

He subsequently associated with the People's National Convention (PNC) before taking the bold step of founding his own political vehicle — the United Renaissance Party (URP), of which he served as founder and leader. In 2012, the URP endorsed him as its presidential candidate, underscoring his enduring ambition to contribute to Ghana's political leadership at the highest level.

By 2017, however, Wayo announced his intention to step away from active politics, expressing a desire to focus instead on farming and supporting rural agricultural communities. True to his word, he had previously advocated strongly for agricultural development and had supported farmers through the distribution of farming tools, including cutlasses.

Why it matters for Ghana

Kofi Wayo occupied a unique space in Ghana's democratic landscape. Unlike many political figures who operate largely within the machinery of the two dominant parties — the NDC and the NPP — he carved out an identity as a genuinely independent voice. His willingness to criticise whichever party was in government, regardless of past affiliations, was relatively rare and gave him a credibility with sections of the Ghanaian public who felt let down by mainstream politics.

His founding of the URP also reflected a broader desire among some Ghanaians for political alternatives beyond the two-party duopoly that has defined the country's Fourth Republic. Though the URP never achieved electoral breakthroughs at the national level, its existence was a statement about the democratic space Ghana affords to political pluralism.

Beyond politics, his advocacy for farmers and rural development resonated in a country where agriculture remains a critical sector of the economy and a livelihood for millions. His later years — devoted to farming rather than the political spotlight — spoke to a consistency in that commitment.

Reactions and remembrance

News of his passing quickly spread across social media and Ghanaian news platforms on Saturday, with many Ghanaians paying tribute to his boldness and distinctive contribution to public discourse. Though he never held high political office, Wayo's frequent media appearances and blunt commentary made him a recognisable and often entertaining figure on the national stage for over two decades.

His family has not yet released details regarding funeral arrangements, and GH Today will provide updates as they become available. Ghana bids farewell to a man who, whatever one's political persuasion, was undeniably his own person — unfiltered, unconventional and unforgettable.
