KNUST to manufacture farm equipment and smart traffic lights in landmark government partnership

Ghana's leading science and technology institution is poised to translate its research capabilities into tangible solutions for national development, with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) agreeing to partner with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture on two major initiatives spanning agricultural mechanisation and urban infrastructure.

The collaboration was formalised during a meeting between KNUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Christian Agyare and Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture Hon. John Dumelo, who represents Ayawaso West Wuogon. The partnership represents a significant step towards reducing Ghana's reliance on imported agricultural equipment whilst positioning university research at the centre of government procurement and national problem-solving.

Locally designed farming equipment to transform agriculture

The primary focus of the partnership is the design and manufacture of agricultural machines and tools that can be deployed to farmers across Ghana. Deputy Minister Dumelo emphasised that government undertakes substantial procurement annually, with an opportunity to channel these contracts towards solutions developed by Ghanaian universities rather than foreign manufacturers.

"We should be able to change the norm to allow most of our university students to come up with designs that we can expand on to reduce importation," Dumelo stated during the meeting. KNUST's engineering departments will lead the initiative, with the long-term objective of increasing the use of locally developed technologies in government agricultural projects.

The move addresses a persistent challenge in Ghana's agricultural sector: inadequate equipment and mechanisation infrastructure that limits productivity and forces farmers to purchase expensive imported machinery. By leveraging KNUST's technical expertise, the partnership aims to develop affordable, locally-manufactured alternatives tailored to Ghanaian farming conditions.

Smart traffic lights and constituency development project

Beyond agriculture, the collaboration extends to the development of locally manufactured smart traffic-light systems for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency. The project will involve the DIPPER Lab in the College of Engineering, working alongside experts from the College of Science to design and deploy systems that address traffic congestion challenges.

Deputy Minister Dumelo recalled that KNUST students had previously developed traffic lights during his time at the university, expressing interest in reviving this model as a demonstration project. He indicated ambitions for the system to serve as a replicable model across other constituencies nationwide.

Professor Eric Tutu Tchao, Scientific Director of the DIPPER Lab, outlined the technical scope of the project, emphasising that it would require sustained collaboration between multiple university departments to deliver effective solutions.

Why it matters for Ghana

This partnership signals a critical shift in how Ghana approaches development challenges. Rather than importing finished products or relying entirely on foreign expertise, the collaboration positions KNUST as a hub for homegrown innovation that can directly serve government needs and boost the national economy.

For the agricultural sector specifically, locally designed equipment could significantly reduce import bills whilst creating opportunities for Ghanaian engineers, manufacturers and entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses. For urban development, demonstrating that Ghanaian universities can design and deploy smart infrastructure undermines the narrative that advanced technology requires foreign providers.

The model also creates a pathway for university research to reach real-world application, enhancing the relevance of tertiary education and incentivising students to pursue science and engineering careers with tangible career prospects.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Agyare described the initiative as aligning with KNUST's strategic vision of strengthening partnerships that translate expertise into practical solutions, assuring the Deputy Minister of the university's full technical capacity and commitment to delivering both projects successfully.
