Interior Minister Tells Accra Residents to Work From Home as Heavy Flooding Grips Capital
The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has called on residents of Accra to work from home on Monday after heavy overnight rainfall triggered widespread flooding, leaving large parts of the capital gridlocked and inaccessible.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, the Minister warned that conditions could worsen. "Based on what the meteorological department is telling us, we expect it to be heavier if the prediction of more rains from Togo gets here, so please, stay home, work from home," he said. He advised workers already at their offices to remain in place until conditions improve, while those yet to leave home should stay put and operate remotely where possible.
Muntaka also urged employers across both the public and private sectors to activate flexible working arrangements, stressing that business continuity should be maintained through remote means during the disruption. He added that non-urgent meetings should migrate to virtual platforms such as Zoom, and those deemed critical but unavoidable should be postponed rather than risk unnecessary travel.
Emergency Services Mobilised
The Minister commended the joint response from emergency agencies, including NADMO, the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, and the National Fire Service. He called on these agencies to operate as a single, coordinated unit, urging them to share information and cross-refer emergency calls rather than working in silos. "Please let us work together, let us operationalise the thing as one unit," he stated.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely as meteorologists track the possibility of further rainfall moving in from neighbouring Togo. Residents are being encouraged to stay connected to official updates and avoid flooded roads entirely.
