Accra Flooding: Interior Minister Tells Residents to Stay Home as Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has called on residents of Accra to work from home after severe overnight rainfall triggered widespread flooding across the capital, disrupting traffic and daily life on Monday.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, the Minister warned that conditions could worsen, citing forecasts from the meteorological department suggesting heavier rainfall may arrive from neighbouring Togo. "Based on what the meteorological department is telling us, we expect it to be heavier if the prediction of more rains from Togo gets here, so please, stay home, work from home," he said.
Muntaka advised workers who had already made it to their offices to remain there until conditions improved, whilst urging those yet to leave home to stay put and carry out their duties remotely where possible. He also called on both public and private sector employers to adopt flexible working arrangements for the day.
The Minister further recommended that non-urgent meetings be moved to virtual platforms such as Zoom, with only the most pressing engagements held in person — and only after being postponed to allow safer travel conditions.
Emergency services are currently battling flooded roads and heavy congestion across several parts of Accra. Muntaka praised the coordinated response of multiple agencies, urging them to function as a single unit. "If a call comes to the National Fire Service and you think it is something you need to link to NADMO, don't say this is not for us," he said, stressing the importance of seamless inter-agency communication.
NADMO, the Ghana Navy, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, and the National Fire Service have all been deployed as authorities work to manage the crisis and protect lives.
