Interior Minister Reveals Government Officials Under Investigation in Massive Australia Drug Bust
Insider Probe into Record Drug Trafficking Case
Ghana's Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has disclosed that security officials are interrogating multiple government employees suspected of facilitating a massive methamphetamine smuggling operation. The 320-kilogramme drug consignment, concealed in charcoal shipments, was intercepted by Australian authorities and valued at approximately A$296 million (over GH₵5 billion).
Speaking before Parliament's Committee on Assurance, Mr Mubarak revealed that ongoing investigations have uncovered significant inconsistencies suggesting possible collaboration within Ghana's security apparatus that allowed the illicit cargo to leave undetected. He indicated that questioning of officials remains ongoing and that certain sensitive details cannot yet be disclosed due to the active nature of the investigation.
"Even if you put all these gadgets, remember it is going to be operated by human beings," the Minister emphasised, highlighting that sophisticated border security equipment is only as effective as the personnel managing it. He stressed that compromised staff can render even the most advanced technology ineffective in preventing cross-border crime.
In response to the security breach, Ghana's government has implemented immediate operational changes at entry and exit points nationwide. These measures include personnel redeployment, revised operational procedures, and enhanced border control protocols designed to prevent similar trafficking incidents.
