Inside Ghana's mosquito laboratory: how scientists fight malaria resistance
Behind every effective malaria net distributed across Africa lies years of laboratory research, careful mosquito breeding, and rigorous testing. At the Vestergaard–Noguchi Vector Labs (VNVL) in Ghana, scientists work daily with live mosquito colonies to monitor how these insects evolve and develop resistance to insecticides—work that directly shapes the success of malaria prevention efforts across the continent.
The scale of the malaria challenge remains staggering. In 2024 alone, 282 million people contracted malaria globally, with 610,000 deaths recorded. Africa bears the heaviest burden, accounting for 94 percent of infections and 95 percent of deaths, with children under five representing three-quarters of fatalities. Yet progress is measurable: since 2000, malaria control efforts have prevented more than 1.22 billion cases and 3.5 million deaths across Africa, with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) responsible for 72 percent of these prevented cases.
The evolving mosquito threat
The challenge facing malaria researchers is not static. Mosquitoes evolve rapidly, developing resistance to the insecticides embedded in prevention nets and altering their behaviour patterns. These changes directly undermine the effectiveness of existing tools, making continuous monitoring and research essential to stay ahead of the threat. Ghana's Vector Labs plays a critical role in this arms race, maintaining carefully controlled mosquito populations with different insecticide-resistance characteristics. Scientists use these colonies to conduct standardized testing of nets, including PermaNet Dual, the latest-generation ITN technology, ensuring products perform as designed before reaching families in the field.
The work conducted at VNVL represents more than routine quality assurance. It generates reliable evidence on how nets respond to real mosquito populations they will encounter, informing both product development and surveillance strategies. This behind-the-scenes science—often invisible to the public—proves critical in determining whether malaria prevention tools maintain their protective power as mosquito populations evolve.
Ghana's contribution to regional malaria control
Ghana's role in this research extends beyond its borders. The partnership between Vestergaard and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research has now spanned 15 years, building and sustaining technical capacity for high-quality entomological testing in Ghana. This collaboration has developed specialized expertise in mosquito rearing, laboratory testing of ITNs, and insecticide resistance monitoring—capacity that strengthens not only Ghana's malaria elimination efforts but supports regional and continental progress.
Last year, this commitment deepened through a Memorandum of Understanding involving Vestergaard, the Noguchi Memorial Institute, and Ghana's National Malaria Elimination Program. The agreement reinforces public-private partnerships aligned with Ghana's target of malaria elimination, signalling Government commitment to sustaining the research infrastructure and expertise required for long-term disease control.
Why this matters for Ghana
For Ghanaians, this research carries direct implications. Malaria remains a significant public health challenge in Ghana, with children and pregnant women among the most vulnerable populations. As malaria parasites and mosquitoes develop resistance to existing drugs and insecticides, the effectiveness of prevention tools cannot be assumed. The laboratory work at VNVL ensures that nets distributed to Ghanaian families actually protect them against local mosquito populations. Moreover, the expertise built through Ghana's partnerships creates jobs, builds scientific capacity, and positions Ghana as a leader in vector control research within Africa. This capability attracts investment, supports pharmaceutical development, and strengthens Ghana's ability to independently monitor and respond to emerging threats like insecticide resistance. Understanding mosquitoes—their behaviour, their resistance patterns, their evolution—is ultimately about protecting millions of lives across Ghana and the continent.
