Ghana is hosting one of the world's most prestigious geology conferences at a pivotal moment for African mining. The International Association for Structural Geology and Tectonics (IASGT) conference, held at the University of Ghana and co-organised with institutions from Western Australia, is bringing together leading earth scientists to make a case that Africa's real competitive advantage in mineral exploration lies not just in resource abundance, but in scientific knowledge and technological capacity.
The timing matters. As global demand for gold, lithium and other critical minerals accelerates, countries across Africa are racing to develop their geological expertise. For Ghana's mining sector, improved geological expertise directly translates to better exploration outcomes, reduced risks and more sustainable resource development.
Why structural geology matters for Ghana's mining future
Structural geology—the study of rock deformation and geological structures—underpins resource exploration and extraction. Understanding how rocks have been fractured, folded and faulted over geological time reveals where mineral deposits are likely to form and how they become trapped in the earth. This knowledge is fundamental whether geologists are searching for gold, base metals or emerging minerals like lithium.
Whilst artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly used in mineral exploration to process vast datasets, Prof. Mamtani cautioned that technology cannot substitute for solid geological understanding. Advanced algorithms depend entirely on accurate field observations and expert interpretation. An AI system is only as effective as the quality of the underlying science feeding into it.
