Hawa Koomson Takes NPP Women's Leadership as Party Elects New National Executives
The New Patriotic Party has completed a significant overhaul of its national leadership structure, with former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament Mavis Hawa Koomson elected as National Women's Organiser at the party's delegates conference in Kumasi on Saturday. The election, contested by over 7,000 party delegates at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, saw Koomson defeat her sole challenger Hajia Safia Mohammed to assume control of the NPP's women's wing.
Koomson's election represents a significant moment for women's representation within the NPP's hierarchy. Her new role places her in charge of coordinating women's groups across all party structures and overseeing efforts to increase women's participation in party activities. This comes as the party intensifies preparations for the 2028 general election, with enhanced women's engagement seen as central to its electoral strategy.
Results Across Key Party Positions
The Kumasi conference saw elections held for multiple national executive positions. Justin Frimpong Kodua retained his position as General Secretary with a commanding 4,486 votes, significantly outpacing the second-place finisher Sylvester Tetteh, the former Ngleshie Amanfro MP, who polled 1,340 votes. Eugene Boakye Antwi and Dr Charles Dwamena received 162 and 126 votes respectively.
The National Youth Organiser contest proved more competitive, with Abanga Fuseini Yakubu emerging victorious with 1,550 votes. Clement Opoku Gyamfi secured second place with 631 votes, whilst Michael Osei Boateng polled 78 votes. Other candidates in this race included Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah (46 votes), Vera Oye Bram-Larbi (44 votes) and Alfred Kumi Ababio (25 votes).
What This Means for Ghana's Opposition Party
The NPP's leadership renewal signals the party's strategic focus on organisational consolidation as it prepares for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections. With elections scheduled for such a critical political cycle, the party is clearly investing in strengthening its grassroots infrastructure and ensuring inclusive participation across demographic groups.
Koomson's elevation to the women's organiser position is particularly significant given her background as a former legislator. Her prior parliamentary experience and track record bring established credibility to a role that requires mobilising a substantial constituency within the party. Women represent a crucial voting bloc in Ghanaian elections, making the strength of the NPP's women's organisation a key factor in the party's electoral competitiveness.
The newly elected leadership team faces the immediate task of streamlining the party's operational structures and rebuilding confidence among grassroots members following recent electoral setbacks. Their mandate extends to coordinating party activities, managing internal party democracy and ensuring resources are effectively distributed across regions ahead of 2028.
Observers will be watching how Koomson and her fellow newly elected executives navigate the delicate balance between party consolidation and the broader political climate in Ghana, as the nation heads towards what is widely expected to be a closely contested election cycle.
